Hope For Heather Awareness Night Ends with a Loss for the Spartans

By Katie Musacchio

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK-The Syracuse Spartans faced the Rome Generals once again at Onondaga Community College on Sunday, July 7 to support the Hope for Heather Ovarian Awareness Corporation. The Generals took home the win (3-2).

Just one program Hope for Heathers conducts is the “Men of Teal”. The Men of Teal inform women of the signs and symptoms associated with ovarian cancer during September (the annual Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month). Sunday night’s game helped raise over 300 dollars toward the cause.

The game started with a quick first two innings, without much action from either team at the plate. However, in the top of the third the Generals began to take off scoring one run due to a fielder’s choice by the Spartans. David Redfield, starting pitcher for the Spartans, manages to hold the General’s off and end the inning avoiding any more damage.

Solid field plays by the Spartans keep the Generals from furthering their lead. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Generals still held the Spartans 1-0. A double by Spenser McGhee brings two runs in for the Spartans to take the lead (2-1).

As soon as they took it, the Spartans also lost the lead. Peter Demaria, on the Generals, hit a two RBI double to push ahead in the seventh inning (3-2).

Unable to come back after the seventh inning, the Syracuse Spartans ended up losing the game (3-2). The Spartans play again July 10 against the Cortland Crush.
