The Spartans and the first place Cortland Crush had a 2pm first pitch Sunday afternoon. Ahead on the season series 4-1, the Spartans elected RHP Jordan Goldmann to start the ballgame. The Crush gave the nod to their lefty ace William Tierney. 

The early half of the game was played with pace in a pitcher’s deul. Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the first. The Spartans’ opened up the scoring with a Kyle Hoog RBI single in the second inning, leading 1-0. 

Nick Palma responded with a 2 RBI double off of Goldmann, as the Crush took the lead 2-1 in the 5th inning. That concluded Jordan Goldmann’s solid day on the mound, allowing 2 ER, on 3 H, in 5.0 IP. 

LHP Jacob Crystal took over in the sixth. He allowed one run, off a Max Mims single with two outs. Cortland then sxtended their lead 3-1.

As for William Tierney, his day didn’t end until the 6th inning. He ended the evening with 6 innings if 1 run ball, with 10 K’s on only 5 hits allowed. 

RHP Cody Caulfield was first out of the bullpen for Cortland. After a Pat May double, and a Charlie Burton hit by pitch, he left the game after only two outs in the 7th. Then it was RHP Alex Meesig’s turn. He held the jam scoreless through the seventh. 

Crystal shut down Cortland 1-2-3 in the 9th, so the Spartans entered the bottom of the 9th down 3-1. That concluded a great relief outing for Crystal, throwing 4.0 IP, allowing one run on three hits, and 3 strikeouts to his credit.

Meesig was still the Cortland arm on the mound for the 9th. He retired all 6 hitters he faced, throwing 2 perfect innings to close out the ballgame for a 3-1 for the Cortland Crush. 

Your notable hitters for both sides: Cortland’s Max Mins went 2-5 with 2 RBIs. Syracuse’s also had a 2-5 day at the dish.

The Spartans move to 13-12 on the season, still soundly in second place in the Eastern division.
