HORNELL, N.Y. — The Syracuse Spartans (7-3-0) fell behind early to the Hornell Dodgers (6-5-0) and couldn’t come back, losing 8-1 in game one of a scheduled doubleheader. Game two was cancelled due to rain.

The Spartans started slowly, giving up five runs in the first inning. The big hit was a three run home run against Syracuse starter Eddie Rosemont. Hornell scored three more runs in the third inning, including another home run, to complete their scoring. The Dodgers got 10 hits off Rosemont.

The lone run from the Spartans came from a Patrick May RBI single in the fourth inning. May picked up his first RBI of the season as his batting average sits at .389 for the year. Syracuse did manage six hits off Dodgers starter Alex Foppe, but he staved off the Spartans attack to pitch all seven innings.

One of the few bright spots from the game was Nick Jessen, who made his Spartans debut. The recent West Genesee High School graduate relieved Rosemont and retired all six batters that he faced in a row, including four strikeouts. The lefty is heading to UAlbany in the fall.

The Spartans play next at Sherrill on Tuesday, June 22, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The next Spartans home game is on Thursday, June 24 at Onondaga Community College’s Baseball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, email [email protected].
