2-0 was your final score Monday evening as the Spartans looked to bounce back from a Doubleheader sweep from Hornell just a few days ago. In that series, they were handed their first and second losses, advancing to 4-2 on the season. As for the visiting Cortland Crush, they rolled into ‘Cuse standing at 2-2-1, for a 7pm first pitch.

Last time around, the reigning NYCBL Champions from Cortland made for a foreseen exciting game. Trading runs early, their final score last time around was 13-11 in favor of the Spartans. This time was quite the opposite. Seth Zurbruegg for the Spartans 6 scoreless frames, adjoined by a handful of walks made for a high pitch count, but an efficient 2-hit outing nonetheless.

Cortland’s Brinkman appeared to stick with him, but the Spartan’s lineup persisted. Grinding deep into at-bats, a barrage of soft-hit knocks, walks, and a special-appearance Kyle Hoog extra-base hit, and just a couple tallied runs was all it took for the Spartans to grab a maintainable lead. Matthew Alexander’s 3 for 3 stood out the most at the plate, getting a hit from both sides. Speaking of switch hitters, Bryce Moore’s 2 for 3 day was a large contributor at the dish as well, with an extra base knock of his own.

Josh Martin was warming up in the bullpen nearing the end of Zurbruegg’s shut-down outing, but the Spartans decided to run with two-way California native in Jordan Goldmann. With effective breaking ball command, the big righty continued to deliver. Shoving his way through 3 scoreless innings, he got an extended relief save in impressive fashion, finishing with 6 strikeouts. No Josh Martin needed!

More pitching is expected to be on display as the short-handed pitching staff of the Spartans will leg out a doubleheader at home, as the Dansville Gliders roll in for a 5pm first pitch.
