Another double-header took place for the Spartans against the Crush in Cortland on Thursday, July 11. The Spartans continued their trend of winning one and losing one during a double-header.

The first game ended in a loss for Syracuse (4-2). Brock Weirather, one of the three Spartan NYCBL All-Stars, pitched well with a total of five strikeouts. However, Weirather’s efforts weren’t enough to win the game. Stephen Centorani also came in, ending the game on the mound.

Cortland stayed steady throughout the 3 p.m. game, bringing runs in during the second, fourth, and fifth innings. The Spartans couldn’t execute until the sixth inning, when they finally scored two runs, putting the game at 4-2. Singles by Zac Legarretta and Joseph Curci contributed to the two runs put on the board. Syracuse ended up falling short, unable to make anything else happen and losing the game.

The Spartans dominated during the second game of the day, winning 13-3. Kevin Lo hit a triple with the first at-bat of the game. Lo would then score during the next at-bat, beginning a solid inning for Syracuse. Two errors in the field and a pass-ball by the Crush allowed for three more Syracuse runs during the first inning. Two hits and two runs for Cortland would follow in the bottom of the first, putting the game at 4-2 right away.

The game became steadier during the second, third, and fourth with each team scoring one more run. However, the Spartans truly ran with it in the top of the fifth. With four hits and seven runs, the Spartans extended their lead to 12-3. Earning one more run in the sixth, the Spartans won the game 13-3.

Steven Colon pitched the majority of the second game, with Stephen Centorani relieving him to finish off the night. Colon had a total of eight strikeouts during his time at the mound.

The Spartans play again on Saturday, July 13 against the Rome Generals. Syracuse’s next home game is at Lafayette High School on Sunday, July 14 against the Sherrill Silversmiths
