The Syracuse Spartans played to a tie in game one of a doubleheader against the Sherrill Silversmiths. Syracuse then lit the bats on fire in game two, dominating with a 20-1 win.
The Spartans grabbed the early lead in game one thanks to the hot hitting of Sammy Lee. The Spartans catcher kept his average above .400 with an RBI single to give Syracuse an early 1-0 lead. However, Sherrill responded with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.
Syracuse rallied in the seventh to retake the lead. Nate Rodriguez cleared a bases-loaded situation with a double. Gibby Sullivan went up as a pinch-hitter and drove Rodriguez home with a single to give the Spartans a 5-4 lead. However, the Silversmiths grabbed another run in the seventh to tie the ballgame and send it into extra innings. Neither team could find a breakthrough in the lone extra frame. Per NYCBL rules, that meant the game ended in a tie.
The Spartans exploded offensively in the second game. Two bases-clearing doubles from Ben Timblin and Joe Wike immediately propelled Syracuse to an 8-0 lead. Sherrill grabbed one run back in the bottom of the frame, but the Spartans fired back with another run in the second to make it a 9-1 ball game.
Syracuse then found the long ball in the third as the Spartans hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to extend the lead. Cade Collins, Ben Timblin and Sammy Lee all found the long ball to give the Spartans a 12-1 lead. The Spartans found four more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by two more RBIs from Timblin. Matt Alexander joined the home run party in the fifth to make it 17-1 Spartans. Sullivan added two more on a home run in the sixth to make it 19-1. One more run from the Spartans in the seventh completed a 20-1 win.
The next Spartans game is on Sunday, June 30 at home against the Cortland Crush. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
