SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse Spartans looking to steal some points from a close division rival, came up short in a tough matchup against the Sherrill Silversmiths. The Spartans struggled to find their rhythm early on, collecting only a single hit through the first eight innings of play. However, a late bottom of the ninth rally provided a glimmer of hope as they managed to score three runs and add two more hits. However, it ultimately wasn’t enough to get them back in it as they fell short by a score of 9-4.

Casey Vaughn shined in the Spartan loss, named the player of the game for his outstanding performance on the mound, while Joe Wike’s triple and Patrick May’s first hit and RBIs of the season provided additional highlights. After the team trailed 7-1 with 2 outs in the top of the second, Vaughn entered the game and delivered an impressive outing. He pitched 5 1/3 innings, surrendering only three hits, with no earned runs and a dominating eight strikeouts. Vaughn’s contribution allowed the Spartans to maintain some resolve and limit the Silversmiths’ offensive opportunities.

Joe Wike also made his mark with an impressive triple that resulted in a run scored. Wike’s ability to come through in crucial moments continues to prove why he will be making an All-Star appearance on Monday. Additionally, Patrick May recorded his first hit and RBI of the season, delivering a double in the ninth inning.

Looking ahead, the Syracuse Spartans will have a break for the All-Star festivities before returning to their home field at the OCC on Tuesday, July 11th. They will face Olean in a doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm. The Spartans are hoping to get some much-needed rest and recovery before hoping to turn it on these last two weeks of the season.  Fans can watch the Spartans’ live broadcast by visiting our website, https://syracusespartans.com/live/.
