The Syracuse Spartans split a doubleheader with the Syracuse Salt Cats on Monday, winning game one 3-1 and losing game two 12-3.

The Salt Cats took the first lead in the fourth inning after a tight pitchers duel. A sacrifice fly would be the only Salt Cats run in game one. The Spartans immediately responded in the fifth with a two-run single by Yoon Chae. The Spartans got an insurance run from a Joe Wike RBI single in the sixth.

That cushion was enough for Harry Meehan, the Spartans starting pitcher in game one. The lefty threw a season-high six innings of one-run ball, only allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four. Chae closed out the ball game with a scoreless 1-2-3 seventh to give the Spartans a 3-1 win in game one.

The Spartans took an early lead in game two. A Gibby Sullivan RBI single and two wild pitches allowed three Spartans runs to score in the first inning. However, the Salt Cats battled back and scored two runs in the second inning and a run in the fourth to tie the game at three.

The Salt Cats took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth. Spartans batters couldn’t respond in time as the Spartans lost game two 12-3.

The next Spartans game is at home against the Cortland Crush on Wednesday, July 3. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
