Syracuse Spartans baseball returns to the diamond for its sixth season in 2023. The Spartans will play 42 games over 53 days, beginning with their season opener in Cortland on June 5.
Last season, the Spartans earned their fourth playoff appearance in their fifth season as New York Collegiate Baseball League members. The squad came one strike away from advancing to the championship series but fell in the Eastern Division Championship to Cortland.
The new-look Spartans seek to exact revenge on the Crush when their season kicks off this week. Over the offseason, the Spartans named Christian Lalomia the fifth head coach in franchise history. Lalomia is an assistant baseball coach for American International College. He previously coached as a graduate assistant for UConn’s baseball program and as a pitching coach for the Norwich Sea Unicorns of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Lalomia pitched for Syracuse in 2017, posting a 1.30 ERA in 11 games with the Spartans.
This year’s roster comprises 30 athletes, 16 of which are local Upstate New York products. Right-hander Luke Boule, who played for the Spartans’ 9U-13U teams and graduated from Christian Brothers Academy, will now pitch for the organization’s collegiate team.
Another North Syracuse native and Siena pitching product Noah Wieczorek is joining the Spartans after being one of Cortland’s aces last summer. Syracuse also has four returning players this season: Perry Chetney, Robert Johnston, Josh Martin and Collin Williams.
Syracuse’s home opener from the Onondaga Community College Baseball Complex is a doubleheader on June 7 against defending runner-ups Olean beginning at 5 p.m.
On June 8, the Spartans will travel to work with the Syracuse Challenger Baseball League, the largest Little League International Challenger Baseball program for children and adults with special needs in the nation. The Syracuse Challengers were one of two organizations invited by the Little League World Series to play an exhibition game in Williamsport, Pennsylvania during the LLWS this August. The Challengers will be on-site at the Spartans’ home game on June 9 for a special Challenger Baseball night at the ballpark.
